This reed-making machine is specifically for bassoon and contrabassoon reeds.

I developed/designed it to be a "hands-free" approach when using epoxy or hot glue to "wrap" a reed. Typically, applying epoxy to wrap reed results in a very rock-hard, durable, and aesthetically pleasing result. However, it can be very time consuming and strenuous on the hands - constantly rotating the reed on your mandrel for 5-10min straight (if not, the glue simply drips off the reeds).

This machine is not meant to aid in wrapping with thread.

With this machine, you can “set it and forget it” while you move on to practicing or working on other reeds. It saves a few minutes per reed, which adds up in the long run.

Essentially, the centripetal force evens out the sealant to make the finished product more aesthetically pleasing than if done by hand. Not important at all towards the reed’s function, but aesthetically pleasing nonetheless.

All aspects of this machine (except the motor) are handmade here at Florida Reeds. The machine features aluminum, wooden, and 3D printed parts. Aluminum is typically painted in black, but any other color is available upon request.

These take approx 10 days to make.
